Licenses

The core of schakl. is open source (AGPL-3.0). A small set of extension modules — currently the leave, subscriptions and automation modules and the MCP server — is governed by the commercial license and requires a license key. The source of those modules is plainly visible in the repository; only using them requires a key.

  • A license key is a signed block of text (SCHAKL1.…). You paste it under Settings → License (visible to the instance owner only).
  • Validation is fully offline: your server never needs to “phone home” to keep running — even if our infrastructure is unreachable.
  • The license states who it belongs to, which modules it covers and until when it is valid. All of that is shown on the license page.

Every fresh install (and every existing install upgrading to this version) gets a built-in trial: licensed modules work fully for two weeks without a key. After that they can no longer be enabled, and already-enabled licensed modules turn read-only.

  • Within the grace period (by default two weeks past the expiry date) everything keeps working — time to renew.
  • After that, licensed modules turn read-only: existing data stays visible and export always works. Nothing is ever lost; installing a new key makes the module fully functional again immediately.
  • The rest of the platform is unaffected.
